Hand-Tied Hair Extensions FAQ
Updated: May 28
Hair Extensions are one of the most popular services I offer and with that comes a lot of questions. In this post I am answering frequently asked questions from emails, DMs, and the guests in my chair.
I will be updating this post as more questions come in. If you don't see the answer to your burning questions please send me an email and I will add it to the list!
What method of extensions do you do?
I have been trained in multiple methods and have combined my knowledge of them to utilize the best aspects and remove the flaws of each technique. No single method works for every single head of hair so being able to customize the installation allows the most seamless blend for your natural hair. I also continue to participate in advanced extension education to ensure that your safety and comfort are my top priority.
How much do your extensions cost?
I am very transparent about my pricing for your hair purchase, initial installation, and maintenance appointments so that there are never any surprises. Pricing is listed on my extensions page. Please note that the hair pricing is a starting price and the final price is determined by the amount of hair you need for the look you are trying to achieve.
How often do I need to come in for maintenance appointments?
Move-up or tightening appointments are recommended every 6-8 weeks. At each appointment we will remove the extensions completely and reapply them. Occasionally the extension color will need to be refreshed as well.
How long do appointments take?
I typically reserve 5 hours for the initial installation appointment. The first time seeing you involves a little more time spent on hair color, weft placement, haircut blending and talking about home care. Maintenance appointments will typically be 2 hours for removal and application. If you need hair color services with your move-up it will be 3-5 hours for your visit.
Should I pack a lunch?
You are more than welcome to bring anything you would like to snack on during your appointment, but I do have a variety of snacks and sweets available, as well as coffee, sparkling waters, and teas. Should your appointment last longer than 5 hours, I am more than happy to order lunch for you!
Do hand-tied extensions hurt?
Proper technique is crucial to pain-free installation and comfortable wear while it grows out. I am sorry if you have experienced pain in the past. There are a few factors that may contribute to that but I am happy to report that I have no complaints of pain from my guests. I will do everything possible to ensure you are comfortable during your appointment and afterwards at home.
How long do the extensions last before I need to buy more hair?
All hair extensions differ because they can come from multiple donors. The most common life span is 9-12 months depending on how well the hair is taken care of at home. I will send you home with all the care items you need at your first appointment to ensure you have the tools you need to succeed and keep your extensions looking their best.
Do I need to come in for a consultation first?
Yes. I do not currently keep a stock of hair extensions in my salon. I order each guest's hair to custom match their own hair and in order to do this I need to be able to see your hair in person. This appointment also allows us to meet face to face before we spend 5 hours together at the installation appointment and for you to be able to feel the hair prior to ordering it.
Can I wear my hair up with these extensions?
Yes! You can style this hair pretty much any way you wish to. Due to the seamless installation method I use the extensions will blend perfectly with your natural hair.
Can I go swimming with extensions in?
Yes but not without taking the proper precautions. Salt water and chlorine can potentially reduce the life of your extensions. The salt and chemicals can dry the hair out leaving it unmanageable and matted. If you plan on swimming you need to prep your hair before going near the water, you can find all of my swimming care tips in my extension home care guide.
Is it true that sunscreen can discolor my extension hair?
Yes it's true. Some sunscreens contain ingredients that will discolor your extensions, especially blonde shades. I recommend not letting your hair touch your skin by tying it up or using the sunscreen recommended in my extension home care guide.
Can I bring in my own hair for you to install?
Unfortunately, no. I have a very high level of standard when it comes to the quality and ethical sourcing of the extension hair that I work with, and cannot guarantee the quality or know the true source of the hair unless it's purchased through me. You can learn more about the hair I work with in this blog post.
Can I get extensions without getting hair color?
It is rare that a guest will not need color at their initial appointment but it is possible. We will determine the color goals you have for your overall look and decide whether color services are needed during your consultation.
Can my regular stylist do my color and you just do my extensions?
No. I totally understand and appreciate that you love your current stylist but I would not be able to guarantee my work or a perfect blend with 2 different stylists working on your hair. Extensions are an investment and I do not like the risk of ruining your desired look.
How do I know you can do the color I want?
I do not take on clients requiring a color correction or vivid colors. You probably found me on Google or Instagram and chances are you saw some of the work I've done. Take a close look at my portfolio and it will give you a good idea of whether we will be a good fit. If you are still having doubts I may not be the artist for you.
Can I get my extensions moved up without getting my color done every time?
Yes. While I recommend color services as needed to ensure a seamless color match, you can opt to just get the hair moved up for a quicker less expensive appointment. For best results you will need to refresh your color on a consistent basis.
I already have hand-tied extensions from another stylist. What service should I book with you?
As a new guest, you will still need to schedule an extension consultation. If I believe your extension hair is in good condition we can reuse it and you will not need to purchase new hair. I do not remove tape-in or keratin bond extensions and if you have any significant tangling or matting there will be a removal fee applied to your appointment.
Are you accepting new clients?
I am always accepting new guests for consultations. Please keep in mind that there may be a wait time for the extensions to arrive before we can schedule an installation appointment.
Do you offer hair extensions in different lengths?
I can currently order hair in lengths: 14", 18", 22", 26", & 28". The brands I work with offer multiple textures as well. You can check them out on Instagram @covetandmane and @haircompounds.
Can you tell me what it's like to take care of extensions at home?
Absolutely! There will always be a slight adjustment period but most of my guests say wearing them makes their daily hair care easier. You can read my detailed extensions home care guide to see if they seem like a good fit for your lifestyle.
Can I change the color of my hair extensions from dark to light?
Unfortunately, no. It is not recommended to lighten extension hair. If you are someone who likes to change your color from season to season, hair extensions may not be a great option for you unless you plan on investing in new hair every time you decided to switch up your look.
Can I change the color of my hair extensions from light to dark?
Yes, but please keep in mind that if you choose to switch to a darker look the extension hair will have to remain dark because it cannot be lightened. To add brightness you would need to invest in new hair.
I hope this answered your questions but just in case it didn't, please feel free to reach out to me so that I can help you. If you are ready to add hand-tied hair extensions to your life head over to my extension page to get started! I can't wait to help you with your hair goals!
